Custom software vs off-the-shelf: how to decide
Buy when the product is the process
If a mature product already matches how you sell, bill, or teach, buy it. Configure it. Train people. Do not pay to rebuild a solved problem because a vendor flattered you.
Build when the process is the advantage
If your margin, speed, or compliance lives in a workflow no product respects, custom software can be cheaper than five years of workarounds. The test is not “are we unique.” The test is “will we still be fighting this tool in two years.”
The mixed path
Many DigitalA2Z projects are mixed: a standard product for the commodity part, a focused system for the part that makes you money. Discovery should name that split. A single slogan — always custom, always package — is usually a sales line.

Questions
Will you ever tell us not to build?
Yes. If a product fit is obvious, we say so. We would rather lose a build than own a regret.
What about lock-in?
Products lock you into licences and their roadmap. Custom locks you into maintenance. Both need an exit story in writing.
